Non-Slip Floor Coating
Non-Slip Floor Coating Solutions
All of us are familiar with non-slip floor coatings. These specially treated floor surfaces are seen in many factories, offices, shopping malls, and other heavy foot traffic areas. The primary objective of these coatings is to prevent accidents and injuries.
The slip resistance properties of these coatings can be attributed to different types of aggregates. For this purpose, water and solvent-borne resin-based acrylic, polyurethane and epoxy coatings are used to create a non-slip texture. Non-slip floor coatings provide numerous benefits by making floors safe for all.
The disadvantages of slip-resistant additives are that they make the surface harder to clean and it requires a different type of cleaning method. It is, therefore, a compromise between slip resistance and ease of cleaning, but within the confines of the law.
Slips and trips are a serious problem in Australia, both at home and in the workplace. They account for more than a third of all workplace injuries, and over 30% of regular accidents involve slips.
If you are an employer, you have a duty of care to provide a safe workplace for your employees and are liable under Australian law if you neglect it. Fortunately, there is a simple remedy: an anti-slip coating is easily applied and effective in preventing slip-caused injuries.
Unsafe stairs are the leading cause of slipping, but any floor that is wet or dirty becomes a heightened risk. Surfaces such as handrails, door handles, and tool grips can also benefit from an anti-slip coating.
Here we provide you with all the information you need to determine which anti-slip flooring solution is right for your project and help you find the anti-slip floor coating product you need.
Pre-mixed Non-slip Surface Coating
The simplest of the anti-slip coatings, these products come with aggregate pre-mixed, either as a two- or single-component system, which creates a rough-textured surface as the coating dries. These coatings are durable, water and oil resistant, and come in epoxy, polyurethane varieties.
They are often divided into categories based on specific needs: Offshore (corrosion resistant anti slip paint for metal), Industrial (chemical and abrasion resistant coatings, non-slip floor coating) and Commercial (aesthetically appealing non-slip floor coating).
This option is recommended for interior and exterior floors, walkways, decks, patios, mild industrial and commercial environments with heavy pedestrian foot traffic and light rubber-wheeled cart traffic. Hospitals, kitchens, change rooms, schools, anywhere that requires a slip-protection coating.
Coating Plus a Non-slip Additive
Anti-slip properties are given to a coating by adding an aggregate such as sand, glass beads, rubber crumb, and others. The aggregate provides a rough surface that prevents slipping.
Aggregate can be mixed through a coating before application or sprinkled over a still wet first coat. If applied second, it should be allowed to dry before having excess aggregate brushed away and a second coat applied on top.
The aggregate comes in three grades: fine, medium, and coarse, in order of increasing anti-slip strength. All these options result in a non-slip floor coating.
This option is recommended for heavy industrial-use flooring to kitchen floors. While aggregate is a flexible material, the aggregate you choose affects which coating you can use. For instance, glass beads and synthetic aggregate can be combined with acrylic coatings as well as resin coatings (epoxy, urethane, polyaspartic and polyurea), whereas silica sand, aluminium oxide, coloured quartz and flint silica aggregates can only be used with resin coatings.
While appropriate for all surfaces, we can advise accordingly based on your coating and aggregate pairing.
Non-slip Nano Coating
An anti-slip coating based on nano technology uses the numerous benefits of nano coatings and adds one more by making them non-slip, too. A relatively new process, this non-slip coating type provides a textured surface on a scale so small it is virtually unnoticeable, but which actually becomes even more non-slip when it is wet. These coatings are also durable, waterproof, abrasion-resistant, long-lasting, low-maintenance and non-toxic.
This option is recommended for applications that require a clear, glossy finish and a very thin coating profile. Anti-slip nano coatings can be used for interior and exterior applications including entryways and ramps, in food preparation areas, and in wet-prone areas like spas, swimming pools, and leisure centres.
While appropriate for all surfaces, we will advise accordingly based on your needs for a non-slip floor coating.
